The Clip That Launched a Thousand Memes

We have all been there. You spot someone from behind, give them a friendly tap on the shoulder, and then realise with creeping horror that it is, in fact, a total stranger. Most of us suffer this indignity in a Tesco car park. Tottenham interim head coach Igor Tudor managed it on live television at Anfield.

Before Spurs' Premier League clash with Liverpool on 15 March, cameras caught Tudor apparently approaching a bald man from behind, giving him a matey pat, only to discover it was not Liverpool boss Arne Slot but Allan Dixon, Tottenham's player liaison officer. Both men are bald. Both were standing in roughly the right spot. An easy mistake, you might say.

Tudor, naturally, says it was no mistake at all.

Tudor's Version of Events

Speaking to the press ahead of Tottenham's upcoming clash with Nottingham Forest, the 47-year-old Croatian was keen to set the record straight. He insists the whole thing was a deliberate joke aimed at Dixon, a man he spends upwards of ten hours a day with.

"It's not Allan, it's Arne," Tudor quipped, revealing that he now jokingly refers to Dixon by the Liverpool manager's name. He even claimed to have deliberately repeated the gag before the Atletico Madrid match on 18 March, just to prove it was intentional. Which is exactly what someone who genuinely made the mistake would say, of course.

Tudor only discovered the clip had gone viral when his 20-year-old son rang him to report it was doing the rounds back in Croatia. Nothing quite says "Dad moment" like your own child phoning to tell you the entire internet is laughing at you.

Who Is Allan Dixon?

For those unfamiliar, Dixon is no ordinary backroom figure. He is Tottenham's long-serving player liaison officer and, notably, the brother-in-law of former Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. Dixon's twin sister Tracey is married to Levy. So if Tudor did genuinely mix him up with the opposition manager, he picked a rather important person to accidentally ignore.

The Lucky Charm Theory

Here is where it gets interesting. Before the viral moment, Tudor's spell in charge had been nothing short of disastrous. Appointed on 13 February following the sacking of Thomas Frank, the former Juventus, Lazio and Marseille coach oversaw four consecutive defeats to kick things off. Tottenham were spiralling deeper into a genuine relegation scrap.

Then came the Anfield trip and the infamous shoulder tap. Dominik Szoboszlai's 18th-minute free kick had Liverpool cruising, but Richarlison popped up in the 90th minute to snatch a 1-1 draw, ending Spurs' six-game losing streak. Three days later, Tottenham beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 at home in the Champions League last-16 second leg, their first home victory in two months.

Granted, they still went out 7-5 on aggregate after that 5-2 mauling in Madrid. But still. Two matches unbeaten since the bald-man incident. Coincidence? Almost certainly. But try telling that to superstitious football fans.

Verdict

Whether Tudor genuinely confused his colleague with the opposition manager or was simply having a laugh with a man he sees every day, the result is the same: a beautifully awkward clip that has brightened an otherwise grim season for Spurs supporters. With Nottingham Forest up next in what amounts to a relegation six-pointer, Tudor could probably do with all the comic relief he can get.

If repeating the joke before Atletico brought a home win, expect him to be bear-hugging every bald man in north London before kick-off on Sunday.
