Justin Timberlake's Drink-Driving Bodycam Footage Drops, and It's Exactly as Awkward as You'd Expect
The Night JT Wished He'd Called an Uber
Nearly two years after Justin Timberlake was pulled over in Sag Harbor, New York, the bodycam footage from his drink-driving arrest has finally been released to the public. And honestly? It plays out like a scene from a comedy that nobody involved finds funny.
The footage, released on 20 March 2026 by Sag Harbor Police Department, runs roughly 19 to 21 minutes. That's the redacted highlight reel, mind you. The full recordings apparently clock in at around eight hours. One can only imagine what didn't make the cut.
What the Footage Actually Shows
On 18 June 2024, officers stopped the then-43-year-old pop star after he ran a stop sign and veered out of his lane while driving a BMW. According to the bodycam audio, the arresting officer told Timberlake plainly: the stop was because he was drifting left and blowing past stop signs.
Officers noted bloodshot and glassy eyes, slowed speech, and the unmistakable scent of alcohol. When asked how much he'd had to drink, Timberlake said he'd consumed one martini. Just the one. A lonely little martini, apparently doing an awful lot of heavy lifting.
Then came the field sobriety tests, which did not go swimmingly. Timberlake stumbled during the walk-and-turn test and offered the immortal observation: 'These are, like, hard tests.' He also mentioned his heart was racing. To be fair, being arrested on camera would do that to most people.
The Name Drop Heard Round the Hamptons
In what has become the most quoted moment from the footage, Timberlake told officers: 'World tour. I'm Justin Timberlake.' It's the sort of line that sounds brilliant in your head and absolutely dreadful out loud, particularly when you're failing a sobriety test.
A female friend with him at the time also attempted to smooth things over, asking officers: 'Can you guys please just do me a favour cause you loved Bye Bye Bye or SexyBack?' She also insisted they couldn't 'put him in jail.' Spoiler: they could, and they did process the arrest.
Timberlake refused to take a breath test, which under New York law triggered an automatic licence suspension.
How It All Played Out in Court
On 13 September 2024, Timberlake pleaded guilty in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court before Judge Carl Irace. The original misdemeanour drink-driving charge was reduced to a non-criminal traffic violation of driving while ability impaired.
His sentence included a $500 fine plus a $260 surcharge, 25 hours of community service at a nonprofit of his choosing, a 90-day licence suspension, and a requirement to make a public safety announcement. Judge Irace reportedly added the community service because he felt the public safety announcement alone wouldn't allow for adequate reflection.
To his credit, Timberlake told the court: 'I did not live up to the standards that I try to hold for myself,' and advised that 'even one drink, don't get behind the wheel of a car.' Sound advice, that.
The Fight to Keep the Footage Under Wraps
Timberlake's legal team didn't let this go quietly. In early March 2026, he sued Sag Harbor Village and Police Chief Robert Drake to block the footage's release, arguing it showed him 'in an acutely vulnerable state' and would cause 'severe and irreparable harm' to his reputation. A judge disagreed, ruling the release didn't constitute an invasion of privacy. Timberlake's team ultimately agreed to the release of a partially redacted version.
It's a rough look, but it could have been worse. Nobody was hurt, he accepted responsibility, and hopefully the 'even one drink' message lands with someone who needs to hear it. Sometimes the most useful public service announcement is the one you never planned to make.
